Graacher Domprobst
Graacher Domprobst is a VDP Grosse Lage vineyard in the village of Graach, Mittelmosel, classified alongside the more famous Josephshöfer and Himmelreich sites. The name references the Trier cathedral provost who secured income rights from this vineyard in the 18th century, winemakers had to hand over wine tithes to the ecclesiastical authorities.
Geography and Exposition
The vineyard encompasses 28.5 hectares facing south-southwest at elevations from 110 to 260 meters. The moderately steep to very steep slopes (45-65% gradient) provide excellent solar exposure throughout the day while remaining well-protected from wind and frost by the surrounding topography. This positioning in the heart of Graach's finest vineyard sites gives Domprobst optimal conditions for Riesling ripening.
Terroir and Soils
The soils consist primarily of weathered blue and gray Devonian slate with clay content. The very stony, argillaceous slate warms efficiently during the day and radiates heat at night, promoting uniform and full grape ripening. This combination of slate and clay provides both the drainage necessary for quality viticulture and sufficient water retention for the vines during dry periods.
Wine Character
Domprobst Rieslings typically display intense slate-driven minerality combined with concentrated stone fruit and citrus notes. The wines balance the Mosel's characteristic high acidity with ripe fruit concentration, developing complex tertiary aromas with age. The slate terroir imparts a distinctive mineral backbone and tension that defines serious Mittelmosel Riesling.
Key Producers
Willi Schaefer is perhaps the most renowned producer from Domprobst, with holdings in the prime mid-slope sections. The estate produces classic Kabinett, Spätlese, and Auslese wines that showcase the site's precision and aging potential.
Dr. Loosen owns significant parcels and produces both traditional fruity styles and dry Grosses Gewächs wines from old vines. Ernst Loosen has established himself as one of the premier GG producers in the Mosel Valley.
Markus Molitor also cultivates vines here, producing Auslese and other Prädikat wines that demonstrate the site's concentration.
Position Among Graach Sites
Domprobst sits as the centerpiece among Graach's top vineyards, positioned between Himmelreich and Josephshöfer. While perhaps less internationally famous than its neighbors, the site produces wines of equivalent quality and distinction, particularly from top producers who understand its unique terroir characteristics.
