Zonchetta is one of the lesser-documented Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive (MGA) within the commune of La Morra in the Barolo DOCG zone. As part of the official MGA system introduced in 2010 to codify and recognize Barolo's historic vineyard sites, Zonchetta represents a specific terroir within La Morra's varied landscape, though it has not achieved the same level of international recognition as the commune's most celebrated sites such as Brunate, Cerequio, or Rocche dell'Annunziata. Like many of La Morra's vineyards, Zonchetta benefits from the township's characteristic soil composition and generally favourable exposition, producing wines that express the more approachable, aromatic style for which the western side of the Barolo zone is known.
La Morra, positioned west of the Alba-Barolo road that runs through the valley floor, sits squarely within what can be considered the more delicate half of Barolo's geographical divide. This division, while simplified, reflects genuine geological and stylistic differences between the western communes (La Morra and Barolo) and the eastern townships (Castiglione Falletto, Monforte d'Alba, and Serralunga d'Alba).
Terroir
Zonchetta's terroir is defined by its location within La Morra, where the soils are predominantly calcareous marls from the Tortonian epoch. These relatively compact and more fertile soils distinguish the western Barolo communes from their eastern counterparts, which feature a higher proportion of compressed sandstone from the Helvetian epoch. The Tortonian marls are less dense than the sandstone-rich soils found to the east, and this fundamental geological difference has profound implications for vine growth and wine character.
The calcareous marl composition provides good water retention while remaining sufficiently well-drained for quality viticulture. The relatively compact nature of these soils, combined with their fertility, encourages vine growth but requires disciplined vineyard management to maintain the low yields (maximum 56 hectoliters per hectare) mandated by Barolo DOCG regulations. The limestone component contributes to the elegant acidity that characterizes wines from this soil type, while the clay fraction provides adequate moisture during the growing season.
While specific microclimate data for Zonchetta is limited, La Morra's vineyards generally benefit from varied expositions across the commune's undulating topography. The interplay between soil composition, elevation, and aspect creates the conditions for Nebbiolo to achieve full phenolic ripeness while retaining the variety's signature acidity and aromatic complexity. The Tortonian marls tend to produce wines that reach approachability earlier than those from the harder, sandstone-rich soils of the eastern communes, though this does not imply a lack of aging potential.
Wine Characteristics
Wines from Zonchetta, in keeping with the broader La Morra style, tend toward the softer, more immediately aromatic expression of Nebbiolo. The calcareous marl soils produce Barolos that are characteristically fruity and perfumed, with less of the structural austerity found in wines from Serralunga d'Alba or parts of Monforte d'Alba. This is not to suggest that Zonchetta wines lack structure (all Barolo must possess the tannins and acidity that define Nebbiolo) but rather that the tannins tend to be finer-grained and the overall impression is one of elegance rather than power.
The aromatic profile typically features red fruits, floral notes, and the complex array of secondary and tertiary characteristics that Nebbiolo develops with age: tar, rose petals, dried herbs, and earthy undertones. The wines generally show good concentration while maintaining a sense of lift and perfume that distinguishes La Morra from the more muscular eastern communes. These wines can be approached earlier than the most structured Barolos, though the mandatory minimum aging requirements (38 months in total, with at least 18 months in oak) ensure that all Barolo receives substantial maturation before release.
The style of Zonchetta wines would typically benefit from 10-15 years of cellaring to reach full maturity, though they may show pleasure earlier in their evolution compared to the most age-demanding sites. The interplay of fruit purity, aromatic complexity, and refined tannin structure makes these wines versatile at the table, pairing well with the rich Piedmontese cuisine for which Barolo has traditionally been the wine of choice.
Current Context
Zonchetta's relative obscurity compared to La Morra's most famous sites reflects the historical reality that certain privileged positions have always commanded greater prestige and higher prices. The written tradition from Lorenzo Fantini in the late 19th century through modern authorities like Luigi Veronelli, Renato Ratti, and Alessandro Masnaghetti has consistently highlighted a shortlist of the finest La Morra crus, and Zonchetta has not featured prominently in these hierarchies.
This does not diminish the site's legitimacy as an MGA or suggest inferior quality, but rather indicates that it has not historically been singled out by producers or négociants as a vineyard worthy of separate bottling and promotion. The introduction of the official MGA system has provided Zonchetta with formal recognition, allowing producers working this site to designate it on labels and potentially build its reputation over time. As the Barolo zone continues to refine its understanding of individual terroirs and as consumers seek alternatives to the highest-priced trophy sites, lesser-known MGAs like Zonchetta may gain greater appreciation for their distinctive expressions of place within La Morra's compelling terroir.
