DOP Biscoitos

Covering vineyard areas on Terceira island, particularly around the village of Biscoitos on the northern coast. Permitted varieties include:

  • Arinto dos Açores, Verdelho, Terrantez da Terceira for whites
  • Maximum yield of 10,000 kg/ha
  • Minimum alcohol of 10.5%

Terceira's deeper, more weathered volcanic soils produce wines with greater body and slightly softer acidity than Pico. The wines show less overt salinity but often greater aromatic complexity, particularly from Terrantez da Terceira when fully ripe.

Vinho Regional Açores

Wines that don't qualify for DOP status (due to variety, yield, or production method) may be labeled Vinho Regional Açores. These vintages produce excellent wines that express terroir clearly, if without the added depth of exceptional years. Most recent vintages fall into this category.

Challenging Vintages: Occur when storm activity intensifies or rainfall becomes excessive. Disease pressure increases, forcing earlier harvest and more aggressive crop selection. Wines show aggressive acidity, lean fruit, and sometimes green notes from incomplete ripeness. However, even challenging vintages can produce good wines from top producers who farm meticulously and select fruit carefully. Recent difficult vintages include 2017 and 2014.

Vintage Consistency: The Açores shows less vintage variation than many continental regions. The maritime climate prevents catastrophic heat or frost events, and the region's naturally high acidity means wines rarely suffer from heat-induced flabbiness. The difference between a great vintage and a challenging one is measured in degrees of ripeness and complexity rather than fundamental wine quality.

Climate Change and Future Vintages

Warming trends may benefit the Açores by providing more consistent ripeness and reducing the frequency of marginal vintages. However, increased storm intensity could offset these gains. KEY PRODUCERS: Guardians of Atlantic Viticulture

Azores Wine Company (António Maçanita)

The most internationally recognized Açorean producer, established by António Maçanita (of Fita Preta and FitaPreta in mainland Portugal) in 2014. Maçanita recognized the unique potential of Açorean terroir and invested in vineyards across Pico and Terceira.

Results are polarizing: the wines show pronounced oxidative character and vintage variation, but also remarkable complexity and aging potential.

Machado represents the traditional Açorean approach adapted for modern quality standards. His wines won't appeal to everyone, but they offer an unfiltered expression of place.

Cooperativa Vitivinícola da Ilha do Pico

The island's cooperative, founded in 1949, represents approximately 150 small growers. The cooperative produces the majority of Pico's wine, ranging from basic bottlings sold primarily on the islands to premium selections from specific vineyard areas.

Quality has improved significantly over the past decade with investment in modern winemaking equipment and better vineyard management. The top-tier wines, labeled with specific curral names, offer excellent value and authentic Açorean character.

The cooperative plays a crucial role in maintaining viticulture on Pico by providing a market for small growers who couldn't economically produce and bottle wine independently.

Brum (Terceira)

One of the oldest producers in the Açores, established in the 19th century. Brum produces wines from Terceira, including varietal bottlings of Verdelho and Terrantez da Terceira.

The estate maintains traditional oxidative aging in old casks for some wines, producing styles that recall historical Açorean wines. These aged bottlings show nutty, caramelized character with pronounced salinity: an acquired taste, but historically significant.

Volcano Wine

Viticultural Challenges
